Upgrading from Cardbox 3.0 to Cardbox 3.1

Cardbox 3.1 is fully compatible with Cardbox 3.0 and you do not need to change your setup in any way. This page describes the impact of the new licensing arrangements in Cardbox 3.1.

Licensing

Cardbox 3.1 is licence-free. Cardbox 3.0 isn't.

Single-user

If you have a single-user copy of Cardbox 3.0 and upgrade to Cardbox 3.1, you no longer need to worry about licences. If you were a Home Edition user, you now have all the features of the Professional Edition, because Cardbox 3.1 does not have separate editions.

Multi-user / network

The simplest approach is to upgrade both the client and the server at the same time. Then no licensing issues will arise, because both the client and the server are licence-free.

If you upgrade just the client and not the server, Cardbox 3.1 will continue to honour the licence settings it has inherited from Cardbox 3.0: for example, it will continue to present its licence to the server if it was configured to do so. So everything will continue to work as you expect.

If you upgrade just the server and not the client, the Cardbox 3.1 Server will continue to honour the licence settings it has inherited: for example, it will continue to lend user licences if it was configured to do so. So everything will work as you expect.

Access codes

In Cardbox 3.0 you needed access codes in two cases: when setting up user profiles for the first time, and when setting up encryption. This was to prevent malicious users from password-protecting or encrypting a database without authority.

Single-user

Single-user copies of Cardbox 3.1 no longer need access codes. This is because we presume that the user of the database is also its owner and does not need special authority to do things with it.

Multi-user / network

It is now the responsibility of the administrator of the Cardbox Server to set up an access code which users will have to enter if they want to encrypt or password-protect a database. This is done in the Security page of the Cardbox Server control.
